The first session of the parliament for the current year is set to commence on February 5th.
On Sunday, the parliament secretariat communicated to the media that Speaker Mohamed Aslam has scheduled the opening session for this year at 9:00am on the said date.
This inaugural session will be notable for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who assumed office on November 17th last year, as he is expected to deliver his first presidential address.
With the new government approaching its two-month mark, the parliament has not yet officially approved the cabinet.
On December 30th, the parliament’s Government Oversight Committee voted in favor of endorsing President Muizzu’s cabinet. This decision came just as the parliament was adjourning for recess.
On the same day, the main opposition MDP, which currently holds a majority in parliament, started gathering signatures from MPs to convene an extraordinary session outside of the regular schedule for a vote on the cabinet. As of now, no specific date has been set for this session.
