Adam Azim, the recently elected mayor of Male’, the capital of Maldives, has emphasized his commitment to avoiding the creation of superfluous positions within the city council and insists on the necessity of having competent individuals to effectively manage any organization.
In a Tuesday interview with Sun, following his victory in the Male’ City mayoral by-election last Saturday, Azim stressed his intention to refrain from creating unnecessary jobs and indulging in excessive spending. He pointed out the contrast with the previous administration under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, which established 365 new positions and appointed 13 high-salary consultants.
When asked about his plans for job creation, Azim, the former CEO of MTCC, acknowledged the importance of having skilled people in his team. He intends to provide job opportunities for such individuals during his term.
“I need capable individuals by my side. No place can function effectively without them,” Azim remarked. “However, you won’t see me engaging in wasteful hiring. I aim to employ people who are genuinely needed for their roles. By God’s will, there will be no wasteful hiring under my watch.”
Furthermore, Azim mentioned that he has no immediate intentions to dismiss any current staff members at the city council. He plans to make such decisions after formally taking office.
Representing the main opposition MDP, Azim secured his mayoral position with 7,621 votes, surpassing his nearest competitor, former attorney general Aishath Azima Shakoor of the ruling PNC party, who received 5,031 votes.
