British artist Banksy’s latest creation, a poignant statement on the Gaza ceasefire, was illicitly removed shortly after being placed in South London on Friday.
London police apprehended a man on Saturday, suspecting him of the theft of Banksy’s artwork. This piece featured a stop sign embellished with the images of three military drones.
The suspect, a man in his 20s, was arrested and is being held for alleged theft and criminal damage, according to the Metropolitan police.
Known for his sharp social critiques through art, Banksy’s recent street art addition showcased three aircraft resembling the American MQ-1 Predator drones, commonly used in Middle Eastern conflicts, including in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, and Syria.
An Unorthodox Artistic Style
The theft was documented in online videos and images, showing the thief using pliers to forcibly remove the sign, aided by an accomplice. The duo swiftly fled the scene, even as bystanders watched the event unfold.
Banksy, who enjoys a significant following of over 12 million on Instagram, had posted a picture of this artwork on his website and social media platforms just before the theft occurred.
The artist is celebrated for his unique, boundary-pushing art style, frequently merging public installations with elements of performance art.
This latest artwork emerged amid escalating tensions in the Israel-Palestine conflict. It came at a time when global leaders were deeply divided over calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, which has been under intense Israeli bombardment, resulting in over 20,000 casualties.
