During a recent state visit to China, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives emphasized the critical need for effective climate adaptation strategies in the face of undeniable climate change.
In an interview with CGTN, President Muizzu acknowledged the stark reality of climate change and its implications for the Maldives. He underscored the importance of incorporating robust adaptation measures into the nation’s development plans. “Climate change is a reality we cannot ignore. The key for our nation lies in implementing appropriate adaptation strategies within our developmental framework,” he remarked.
One of the significant projects President Muizzu highlighted was the Rasmale’ initiative, aimed at creating a safe, elevated island. “The project involves reclaiming 1,100 hectares of land to build an island elevated three meters above sea level, replete with extensive greenery and designed as a sustainable city,” he explained.
President Muizzu also referred to the environmental commitments he made at the COP28 summit. These include planting five million trees over five years, reducing fuel consumption by 33 percent, and a gradual shift towards completely renewable energy sources.
“These types of adaptation measures are crucial,” President Muizzu stated, adding, “Acknowledging the reality of climate change is one thing, but the crux lies in how we adapt and coexist with these environmental challenges.”
