Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef recently unveiled a new government initiative designed to enable nurses and other healthcare professionals who have left the field for various reasons to re-enter the workforce.
This policy, a key component of the Maldivian government’s ‘Hafuthaa 14’ strategic plan, was introduced during a ceremony organized by the Health Ministry on Wednesday morning. Developed in collaboration between the Health Ministry and the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the policy offers a wage-based reemployment system for these former health professionals.
Under this new framework, health professionals can be directly hired based on their qualifications and experience, bypassing the usual requirement of public vacancy announcements typically necessary under standard recruitment procedures.
Additionally, the policy introduces the concept of flexible working hours, which are shorter than the conventional eight-hour workday.
At the launching event, Health Minister Abdulla Khaleel expressed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision for an inclusive healthcare sector. “The president is keen on ensuring that all those who desire to contribute to the nation have the opportunity to do so, to be compensated for their service, and to enhance the focus on mental healthcare,” he remarked.
In parallel, CSC President Mohamed Nasih noted that efforts are underway to develop similar policies for reintegrating professionals from other sectors who have left the service.
