Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has expressed the need for more stringent processes in issuing driver’s licenses as a vital measure to curb the high incidence of dangerous road accidents, particularly in the densely populated Male’ area.
Despite various efforts by the police, including criminal investigations, vehicle towing, and license suspensions, these measures have not sufficiently addressed the issue. Shujau, who assumed his role as the nation’s new Commissioner of Police in December, conveyed to Sun on Monday that reevaluating the current licensing system is essential.
He pointed out that a significant number of accidents are caused by unskilled drivers. “We might need to reassess our licensing system and engage in discussions to reform it into a more effective one,” he stated.
Shujau emphasized the necessity of making both the theoretical and practical aspects of the driving exams more challenging. He also mentioned the need to alter the perception that acquiring a driver’s license is an easy process.
Furthermore, Shujau highlighted that responsibility for traffic safety is not only on drivers but also on pedestrians. He suggested that simple actions like using zebra crossings and checking both sides of the street before crossing can significantly contribute to individual safety.
Recent police statistics reveal that traffic collisions ranked as the second most reported incidents in the third quarter of the previous year. During this period, 1,116 accidents were reported, with 606 being investigated. Of these, criminal charges were pursued in only one case.
